What Are Delta-8 Moonrocks?

What Are Delta-8 Moonrocks?

Moonrocks are the latest craze in the cannabis industry. Keep reading to learn more about what moonrocks are, how they’re made, and how you can enjoy them.

What are Moonrocks?

Moonrocks are hemp buds that are prepared with cannabinoid oil and kief, a collection of loose trichomes, resulting in a final product that is much higher in THC than the bud alone would usually be. This is often done to ‘boost’ cannabinoid levels for cannabis flower on the medicinal and recreational marijuana market. For the legal hemp market, hemp flowers can be treated with delta-8 concentrates and hemp kief to create a 100% legal, smokable alternative to cannabinoid flower.

How are Moonrocks Made?

Moonrocks are made by first rolling cannabis or hemp buds in high potency cannabinoid extracts. This step can also be completed by spraying cannabinoids onto flower pre-harvest. This generally would be quite sticky and difficult to smoke by itself, so a blonde kief (kief is accumulated trichomes/resin glands) is usually added to give a better appearance, reduce stickiness, improve smokability, and add a pleasant terpene profile. The bud rolled in oil, then rolled in dust-like kief, results in a rock-looking final product, hence the name moonrocks.

How Do You Use Moonrocks?

You can use Moonrocks in the same way you would consume any other cannabis bud. Joints, pipes, bongs, and bubblers are all excellent ways to consume this delta-8 product. The greasy nature of moonrocks can make them difficult to break up and keep lit, but most users report success with glassware delivery devices. When smoking Moonrocks, you don’t want to use your grinder to break them up, as they can be very sticky. Instead, use a razor blade or sharp edge to break the rocks into pea sized pieces to load into your delivery device of choice.

Another great way to enjoy Moonrocks is to top off your normal flower bowl with a few pieces to elevate your experience. When you do this, heat the moonrock and let it melt down into the rest of the bowl. Keep in mind that Moonrock bowls can be difficult to keep lit, sometimes needing much more heat applied over longer periods of time. Some dry herb vaporizers can also be used to consume Moonrocks but it’s best to check with your device’s manufacturer before trying this method. Make sure to store your moonrocks in a cool, dry place to keep them from becoming a melted mess.

Because moonrocks can result in an extreme high, it’s a good idea to prepare before you consume them. Eat beforehand to help prevent any nausea, keep plenty of water with you to prevent dehydration and combat cottonmouth, and make sure your tasks for the day are finished because most users report that this is not an active high. Start by consuming small amounts of moonrocks and wait for yourself to acclimate before taking in more to avoid “greening out” or getting too high.

Why Use Moonrocks?

Now that we’ve discussed what moonrocks are, let’s go over why they are the product of choice for many cannabis users. The biggest benefit that moonrock users report is that they are extremely strong. Moonrocks can be an especially effective tool if you have built up a high THC tolerance and have difficulty ‘blasting off’. The added concentrated oil can add high levels of THC, and increase the psychoactivity of your experience. Additionally, moonrocks are known to be relatively inexpensive, often delivering the best bang for your buck out of smokable products. These benefits combined with the legality of delta-8 make moonrocks a strong, cost effective, and legal alternative to cannabis flower. It’s important to note that moonrocks may not be the best choice for first time cannabis users or those with a low tolerance, as they can be very potent.

What is Delta-8?

You can’t step far into the cannabis industry these days without hearing about delta-8. Delta-8 THC is short for delta-8 tetrahydrocannabinol. It is a naturally occurring cannabinoid that reacts with the endocannabinoid system, producing a mild, calming high. Delta-8 is often used both recreationally as well as medicinally, it is effective at preventing nausea, relieving pain, and reducing anxiety.

Delta-8 is often called weed-light when compared to its counterpart delta-9, because it is much less psychoactive. The main difference between the two substances is the fact that delta-8 has a double bond on the eighth position on the carbon chain of its molecule, whereas delta-9 has a double bond on its ninth carbon atom.

How is Delta-8 Legal?

So how is delta-8 legal, but delta-9 isn’t? It all comes down to the 2018 Farm Bill. This bill legalized and regulated the production of hemp in the United States, meaning that hemp and delta-8 are both considered to be federally legal when they contain no more than 0.3% delta-9 THC. Because of the legality, companies that sell delta-8 Moonrocks are not restricted by medicinal or recreational cannabis laws, and have the ability to deliver them directly to the consumer, in addition to not having to charge exorbitantly high taxes and fees.

Although delta-8 is federally legal, legality does vary from state to state so it’s always a good idea to be knowledgeable about your individual state’s hemp laws before you make a purchase.
